The Experience
Saint-Denis is where Gothic architecture was born and where almost every king of France was buried. It's twenty minutes from central Paris, and remarkably few visitors make the trip.
We walk through Abbot Suger's light-filled choir, then among the royal tombs, from Dagobert to Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, and down into the crypt where the remains were reburied after the Revolution. If the workshop is open, you'll see the north spire being rebuilt stone by stone.
Then we follow the canal to the Stade de France and the Olympic Aquatics Centre, to see how the 2024 Games reshaped this part of the city. Fifteen centuries in a single visit.
